Thanksgiving in Colorado

What was originally supposed to be a Thanksgiving trip with very close friends of mine, quickly turned into my introduction to cold weather photography.

This was a short three day trip to Dillon, Colorado, but I obviously brought my camera, eager to photograph the winter wonderland that was to come. Being from Alabama, the cold weather was very very foreign to me. I had little to no experience with snow, or temperatures below freezing. All I had with my was a pair of long johns, a ski jacket, and ski bib.

For skiing this set up would be more than acceptable, but for sitting still while the cold around you freezes the condensation in your mustache, this was far from adequate. But, I didn’t let that stop me.

My main focus was to combine astrophotography with the cold weather. So every night I was out in the frigid temps exploring the town around or cabin. This was just over a year into my photography journey, so it was definitely a challenging trip for me. I think it grew me more than anything. Little did I know it would be the trip to peak my interest in snowy landscapes and cold weather photography. I’m beyond thankful and happy to see how far I’ve come since then.

I didn’t get many “keepers” from Colorado, but the following photos represent growth and the ability to make something of nothing.
